About The Ferret Shelters Directory
The directory is a program developed, managed and maintained by the Ferret Association of Connecticut, Inc. as a service to ferret owners and shelters everywhere. It was created based on data formerly published by Support Our Shelters.
Shelter Listings
Anyone providing shelter or hospice care to pet domestic ferrets can submit a listing. All listings are carefully reviewed before posting. The submitting organization may be contacted to clarify information. Additional details may be added from published sources or modified slightly for consistency with other listings before being published. Listing owners can modify and adjust as desired.
Listings are reviewed at least annually. Organizations may be contacted to confirm the information contained is still applicable.
Ferret-only shelters may request that their listings NOT BE PUBLISHED and that the information submitted be kept confidential.
Directory listings may change. New shelters, particularly those that are ferret-dedicated, are regularly being added. Unfortunately, others may also close or change their characteristics without notice due to lack of funding, volunteer support or just operator “burn-out.” Therefore, users should verify the information provided by contacting the shelter directly via phone or through the Message Form Tab within each organization’s listing.
Directory registrants are asked to provide the following minimal information:
Name
Location by country, city, state, zip/postal code
Nonprofit status – 501(c)3, privately funded, state registered, private foundation
Facility Type – Ferrets only, multi-species, or commercial (pet store, vet, breeder)
Website Links – Petfinder/other adoption sites, social media site such as Facebook and “for sale” items
Specialties – Education offerings, boarding, volunteer opportunities, events, supplies & more
Listings include location maps. A link to Google Maps is built-into the side menu. The map feature is generic to those private shelters who choose not to provide a specific address due to privacy concerns.
Shelter Support
Shop a Ferret Rescue is a unique, searchable shopping portal that links those who sell fundraising items to consumers who wish to support ferret rescue efforts. It is currently presented as a link from each shelter’s listing to the website(s) where they offer items which benefit their work.
The database includes private, non-published contact data. This allows for news broadcasts of importance to ferret shelters such as health warnings or request for aid in response to an emergency, such as a natural disaster or large-scale ferret rescue. Over time features may be added to better serve the ferret community.
Acknowledgements
The Ferret Shelters Directory was initially created in cooperation of Support our Shelters (SOS) and development grants from the Ferret Association of Connecticut, Inc. the Norman E. & Gwyneth L. Staats Foundation through the Circle of Compassion for Animals and The Emma Barnsley Foundation. Continued financial support, oversight, project management, and direction is provided by the Ferret Association of Connecticut, Inc.
This website is dedicated to all shelters, irrespective of size or location and to the people who help support them.
Accuracy of Information
Every effort is made to ensure that data submitted is displayed accurately. However, we have no way to continually verify the accuracy of the data submitted by an organization. Therefore, users are urged to use their own due diligence in verifying the status of any particular shelter listed within, including verification of current status of 501(c)3 status in the United States. The status of all shelters, particularly those that are small, home-based organizations, can change at any time. Please also research shelters yourself before adopting, surrendering a pet, or making a donation. A link to Guidestar, a non-profit which offers further registered non-profit data including financial filings, is provided. To verify the tax exempt, 501(c)3 status of organizations visit the IRS registry.
Tips about how to go about selecting a shelter – to either adopt or surrender a ferret – are provided under Shelter Research. Additional tips are provided under Adoption and Placement – Surrender.
