About The Ferret Shelters Directory
The directory is a cooperative enterprise of the Ferret Association of Connecticut, Inc,, and Support Our Shelters who established and maintain this site as a service to ferret owners and shelters everywhere.
Anyone who provides shelter or hospice care to pet domestic ferrets can submit a listing. All listings are carefully reviewed by volunteers before posting. The submitting organization mayl be contacted to clarify the information. Additional details may be added for from published sources before the posting is published publicly. Listing owners can modify and adjust as desired.
Listings are reviewed at least annually. Organizations may be contacted to confirm the information contained is still applicable.
Ferret-only shelters may request that their listings NOT BE PUBLISHED and that the information submitted be kept confidential. This service is provided in order to use the Ferret Shetlers Directory as the database for Support Our Shelters (SOS) whose mission is to fund both private and public ferret shelters.
The directory is a work in progress. New shelters, particularly those that are ferret-dedicated, are constantly being added. Unfortunately, others may also close or change their characteristics without notice due to lack of funding, volunteer support or just operator “burn-out.” Therefore, users should verify the information provided by contacting the shelter directly via phone, e-mail or through the Send Message to Listing Owner form under each organization’s page.
Directory registrants are asked to provide the following minimal information:
Location by country, city, state, zip/postal code
Nonprofit status – 501(c)3, privately funded,
state registered, private foundation
Facility Type – Ferrets only, multi-species, or commercial (pet store, vet, breeder)
Website Links – Petfinder/other adoption sites, social media site such as Facebook and “for sale” items.
Specialities – Education offerings, boarding, volunteer opportunities, events, supplies & more
The directory listings include location maps and a link to Google Maps is built-into the side menu. A language translator is also included for the convenience of non-English speaking site visitors.
A directory registrant events that include or benefit pet ferrets is searchable by date and location. Events will eventually be automatically ported from Facebook shelter community pages to help registered shelters save time (presently this feature is in beta mode). This also gives broader internet exposure to smaller shelters who do not have the time or resources to maintain a separate website.
Shop a Ferret Rescue is a unique, searchable shopping portal that links those who sell fundraising items to consumers who wish to support ferret rescue efforts. It is currently presented as a link from each shelter’s listing to the website(s) where they offer items which benefit their work. Over time, the Ferret Shelters Directory plans to expand the visibility and functionality of this feature. For the time being, there is a robust search function for potential buyers to identify shelters that offer particular types of products.
The database includes private, non-published contact data. This allows for news broadcasts of importance to ferret shelters such as health warnings or request for aid in response to an emergency, such as a natural disaster or large scale ferret rescue. This site is also the initial database for the ferret shelters and sanctuaries supported by Support our Shelters (SOS). Over time these features will be expanded to better serve the ferret sheltering community.
The Ferret Shelters Directory is a collaboration between the Ferret Association of Connecticut, Inc. (FACT), Ferret Emergency, Rescue, Response & Evacuation Team (F.E.R.R.E.T.), and Support our Shelters (SOS). Financial oversight, project management, and direction is currently provided by FACT. The Ferret Shelters Directory is supported by the Ferret Association of Connecticut, Inc.; the Norman E. & Gwyneth L. Staats Foundation through the Circle of Compassion for Animals and The Emma Barnsley Foundation. Special thanks to Dianna Desrochers, President, The Educated Ferret Association, Inc. for her assistance in managing this site.
This website is dedicated to all shelters, irrespective of size or location and to the people who help support them.
