Pet Store Adoptions & Education Events Survey – May-June, 2014
This survey was sent to approximately 88 participating shelters in AU, UK and the US. Responsese were received by 41 shelters – 38 of whom identifed themselves. The results of the survey are provided in Adobe PDF format on 10 different pages. We removed responses that were marked N/A or none merely to save space in the docs.
Overall conclusions are subjective. We ask our participants to weigh in with their overall thoughts on the Directory Facebook page or via email over the next few weeks as there is much data to digest. A few randmom thoughts that came to us looking at the comments:
- Shelters appreciate the opportunity to meet and provide realistic and accurate information about ferrets to the public.
- Store support is crucial to the success of the event and the feeling that it meets both the store, the public and the shelter’s needs.
- Shelters generally do not adopt at these events and seem to prefer to utilize them to pre-screen or to finalize adoptions only. This likely reflects the care most small, specialized shelters take in placing animals irrespective of species today.
- Pet stores should look to provide incentives to small, all volunteer organizations in some form – either via financial or in-kind donations. Most ferret shelters operate with little to no help and next to no funding. Small species specific shelters are not comparable to large, mainstream shelters with broader bases of support – yet pet stores by and large are usually the primary source of animals arriving AT the shelters participating in these events.

Ferret Shelter Forum & Vaccination Surveys – September, 2014
These surveys were sent to approximately 95 shelters in the US, UK and AU. Results for both along with some observations about the vaccination survey are included below. Please note that the vaccination survey should not be construed as being “scientifically relevant” in any way. However, we believe the results are indicative for the United States ferret shelter population as about half of the shelters and almost all of the primary shelters in the US responded.
Further information about both these surveys can be found under the October, 2014 Shelter Directory Newsletter.
