My name is Dee Gage. I operate a home-based, non-profit ferret rescue located in Grand Rapids, MI named the West Michigan Ferret Connection. I have been advocating for ferrets in Michigan since 2001 and since the shelter opened, over 600 ferrets have found “forever homes.”
My passion for ferrets began in 1996 when I became the owner of two ferrets, Beau and Nilla. In 1996, I became involved with the Great Lakes Ferret Association, which was instrumental in the legalization of ferrets in Michigan in 1994. I created the GLFA’s Education Committee. I’ve had the pleasure of serving on the Department of Agriculture’s Companion Animal Advisory Committee and twice a speaker at the annual MPAW conference (Michigan Partnership for Animal Welfare) 2009 and 2015. I have participated in Michigan State University’s annual Vet-a-visit since 1998. In June 2015, I partnered with the Michigan Friends of Companion Animals supporting the Humane Pet Acquisition Proposal that was adopted by Macomb County.
